Principle 16
Lead Through Change
In uncertainty, people seek meaning, certainty, and evidence that leadership is present.
State plainly what is known, unknown, decided, and still under review — and always what will not change. Acknowledge loss without surrendering direction, create short cycles of action and feedback, and repeat key messages more often than feels necessary, because the informal story spreads faster than the official one.
The Tool
The Change Briefing
Reality: what changed and why. Continuity: what remains true. Direction: what outcome we're pursuing. Next move: what happens in 7-30 days. Voice: how people can raise concerns and information.
Ask yourself
- What uncertainty is my team filling with rumor?
- What can I make more certain today?
